The Tools & Accessories

Intro or... what I think I know: The Hooks are a big part of the EMU.  They are used with every tools and safety tethers.  In all, for my current rendition of the EMU, I counted 23 hooks of three basic types.  Since I have no hard facts about those parts, I have to figure out their size by comparison with object of known size in the many pictures I collected from NASA's web sites.

Hooks Step 1: Based on the references that I can find , I drew the parts at different angles to figure out the basic shapes and proportions.

Old hook (Type 1)

It looks like this type of hooks was used since the beginnings of the EMUs.  The small version of this hook is still in use today.  I call it "Type 1".

New hook (Type 2 Small)

These are the new hooks used with the EMUs.  They come n two formats (small & big).  This drawing is the small version which I call Type 2 Small.

Hooks Step 2: Sculpting the originals using plastic sheets, brass wire and Milliput.

Hooks Step 3: Making molds of the originals and casting a bunch of resing hooks.

Step 3 (making molds)

The first hook I build was the Type 2 Small. I then modified resin copies to build the Type 2 Big and the Type 1.

Hooks family picture

The Grey hooks are the originals.  The Type 2 Big original was build from a casting of the Type 2 Small handle. The Type 1 was build from the a casting of the Type 2 Small hook tip. On this picture the Type 1 is not completed yet.
